Traveling The World As A Remote Worker (True Story)  👨‍💻

Hey Job Surfers!

Ever wondered how people manage to work remotely while exploring the world?

Today we bring you Luciano Lombardi’s fascinating story to inspire you to take action and achieve the best work-life balance 🚀

— Meet Lucho: Senior Product Manager at Athyna
  • Nationality: Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  • Current Location: Morocco.

  • Next Destination to Visit: Tanzania.

  • Digital Nomad Since: 2020.

  • Countries Visited While Working Remotely: +25.

  • Fave Travel Experience: Crossing Annapurna Circle in Nepal, and visiting Pakistani villages.

  • Skills: Product Management, Remote Team Leadership, AI Enthusiast, Python, 3D animation, Game Design.

  • Favorite Remote Tool: Google Spreadsheets.

— How did you end up working remotely? 👨‍💻

“A bit by accident. A former colleague of mine mentioned that a friend of his was working for a company that was looking for someone with product experience, it was kind of a passing-by remark”.

“I was already in a process for another company but out of curiosity I checked what was the situation: It happened to be that the company had offices in Uruguay (I was living in Argentina at the time), but they were open to having remote roles for Argentina.”

“To be honest, the idea of remote work was appealing, but what really caught my attention was the prospect of earning a salary in foreign currency” 🙊

— What’s the biggest challenge you faced? 😅

“The first real challenge was adapting to working closely with a dev team that I had never met in person. As an Argentinian, building rapport by sharing some mate 🧉 at the office is almost a ritual. But I soon realized that similar dynamics could be created remotely, as long as everyone was open to it.”

"This experience helped me overcome my initial hesitation about remote work and eventually led me to Athyna, the global recruitment platform, where I now work as a Senior Product Manager”.

“When I was interviewing for the role, one thing that really stood out to me was the vibe of Athyna’s CEO, Doc. At that point, I was determined not to go back to the rigid, corporate environment I had experienced before. Doc’s laid-back yet driven attitude was exactly what I was looking for. It was a stark contrast to another company I was interviewing with at the time, where they actually asked me to shave my beard because they thought it looked “unprofessional.” Needless to say, that wasn’t the right fit for me. Yikes.”

— You've visited over 25 countries. If you had to pick only one, which would you choose? 🌏️

“If I had to name one country that really stood out to me I’d say Sri Lanka. I went there knowing almost nothing about it, and I was truly blown away by the culture and the people. It was a place that really surprised me in the best way.|

Lucho was able to visit Colombia, Ecuador, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Hungary, Germany, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Sweden, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Brazil, and Morocco - crazy, right?

— How Do You Manage Timezones & Work-Life Balance? 🌈

“Balancing work with travel isn’t always easy, especially when your team is scattered across the globe”.

Depending on the country he is visiting, Lucho organizes his day by exploring the city according to each timezone to make sure he can communicate effectively with the rest of the team located around the world.

📌 Lucho’s Tip: “If you’re working with global teams, make sure you’re available when your team needs you the most, even if it means adjusting your usual routine. Flexibility is key”.

— 3 top recommendations for anyone looking to work remotely? 👨‍💻

I’d definitely recommend checking out Athyna’s website. We’ve got a ton of open roles across various industries—whether you’re into sales, marketing, product management, engineering, creative work, finance, you name it. So, your first step should be heading over to athyna.com and applying to as many roles as you like.

Don’t let your job title limit you. Sometimes it’s about taking on tasks that might not be directly tied to your main role, but if you have the skills, why not? Flexibility is key. You can also check out some freelance platforms for remote tasks that align with your skills or even tasks that push you to learn something new. At the very least, you’ll expand your skillset, which is always beneficial.

→ If you’re just getting started and building your profile, I’d suggest going all-in on LinkedIn. If you need help with that, Athyna has a Chrome extension (Ava) that can guide you—optimizing your LinkedIn profile, tailoring your resume, and even helping you find remote roles that match your skills.
